Software updates are severely lacking for Android devices. HMD Global, however, is set on keeping up with Google. The company that oversees the development of Nokia-branded hardware is now saying Android’s major upgrade for 2017 is on the way.

Owners of the Nokia 3, 5, 6, and 8 are being promised Android 8.0 Oreo by HMD Global’s Juho Sarvikas. The executive, who previously spent time with Microsoft’s defunct mobile division, revealed on Twitter that all of the existing Nokia phones are set to receive the software update released last month by Google. Sarvikas told concerned customers that, while there isn’t a timetable just yet, their phones will be moved to Oreo in the future.

Some of the more important features include enhanced background activity management, picture-in-picture support, and notification dots.

Shortly after introducing Oreo, Google provided a list of partners committing to getting the latest version of Android on new or existing devices by the end of 2017. HMD Global was included; therefore, it seems likely that at least the Nokia 8 will be upgraded to Android 8.0 within the next couple of months. The mid-range and low-end devices, meanwhile, are probably going to stay on Nougat through early 2018.
